How to register for Vodafone M-PESA

Visit any authorised M-PESA agent or Vodashop. (Look out for the 'M-PESA Available here' sign). Kindly note that you must be a Vodacom customer, over 18 years of age to register for M-PESA. Registration is easy and FREE of charge.
 

Step 1: Complete M-PESA registration form

The Agent will provide you with an M-PESA customer registration form. The Agent will use this information you provide to create your M-PESA account.
 
Important: You will be required to provide any one of the following acceptable forms of personal identification:

  • Passport
  • Employer ID 
  • Voters ID 
  • Driver's license  
  • Student ID
  • Letter from WEO/VEO or Reference letter.

Remember to also bring along your active Vodacom SIM card and mobile phone number as this is used to register you for the M-PESA service.
 

Step 2: Agent registers your details on M-PESA

The agent will capture your details using their Agent phone. Once completed M-PESA will send you an SMS confirming that the registration has been successful.
 
The message will also give you a 'start key' of 4 digits. This start key is your unique key used to activate your account. Please write this number down as you need to use it to activate your account as shown in step 3 below.
 

Step 3: Activate Your M-PESA Account

Using your own phone now:

  • Enter *150*00# and press the dial button   
  • You will receive a numbered menu
  • Reply with option 1 or 2 as per your language preference. Ie: 'Activate' or 'Wezesha'
  • You will be prompted to enter your start key. Select reply and enter the start key which is the 4-digit number you received via SMS in step 2.
  • Next create a new PIN number. This PIN number should not be revealed to anyone else as it is the key to your M-PESA account.
  • Confirm the new PIN number by entering it again.
  • Enter your date of birth (It must be the same as the one the Agent entered when they registered you.)
  • Once you have done this, you will receive an SMS confirming the activation of your M-PESA account. This SMS will also contain your secret word, which you must remember as you will require it whenever you need assistance from M-PESA Customer Care representatives.
  • To access the M-PESA menu, just dial *150#, and you will receive the following menu:

M-PESA
1. Send Money
2. Withdraw Cash
3. Buy Airtime
4. My Account

You are now a registered M-PESA customer! Keep your M-PESA PIN confidential. Do not share this PIN with anyone, as it provides access to your account.
